How to Clean Window Screens: What Yours Is Woven From Decides the Method

Almost every guide to this gives one instruction. The company that weaves the mesh gives two, and which one applies to your house depends on a material difference most homeowners have never been told to look for. On this coast it matters more than it does anywhere else, because the weave we use here is tighter than the national default.

The short answer

Lift the screen out of the opening, lay it flat, and wash it with a mild soapy solution and a soft brush — not a hose held against it in the window, and never a pressure washer. The screening manufacturer Phifer gives two instructions rather than one: “Rinse metal products with water only. Clean vinyl products with a mild soapy solution, avoiding hard scrubbing.” A fiberglass screen takes that second branch, because fiberglass screening is “woven from permanent glass yarn which has been coated with a protective vinyl” — and fiberglass is what most Florida windows and enclosures carry. Aluminium mesh gets water. Fiberglass gets mild soap. Both get a gentle hand, and both go back in dry.

There is a version of this job that takes twenty minutes for a whole house and leaves the screens looking new, and there is a version that takes the same twenty minutes and leaves you with a stretched panel, a streaked window and a strip of grit in the sill. The difference is almost entirely in the first two decisions: whether the screen comes out of the opening, and what you put on it once it does.

Neither decision is obvious, because the mesh in a Florida window is not the mesh the national how-to guides are describing, and the manufacturer of that mesh does not give the single instruction those guides give.

A screen you can lift out and a screen you cannot are two different jobs

Before anything else, separate the two things people call a screen. A window or slider screen is a small, light frame — usually rolled aluminium tube, sometimes vinyl — that sits in a track and is designed to be removed. That is the subject of this page, and it is a genuinely easy do-it-yourself job.

A pool cage or screened lanai is not a removable panel. It is a structure: an engineered aluminium frame carrying panels of the same fabric, splined into channels you cannot take apart, often two storeys tall and frequently with its own integrated gutter running the beam. It is cleaned in place, from the outside, with low pressure, and that is a different method at a different price — we set out what it costs by metro on the Pensacola and Naples enclosure pages. The manufacturer’s instruction has two branches, and most Florida screens take the second one

Phifer publishes the answer in its own screening FAQ, and it is worth reading closely because it is a fork, not a sentence: “Rinse metal products with water only. Clean vinyl products with a mild soapy solution, avoiding hard scrubbing.”

Most people read that, decide their screen is obviously not vinyl, and go with water only. That is usually the wrong branch. The company’s description of its own fiberglass screening explains why: it is “woven from permanent glass yarn which has been coated with a protective vinyl to ensure lasting beauty, color and flexibility.” A fiberglass screen is a vinyl-surfaced product. The glass strand underneath is the structure; the vinyl is what you are actually cleaning, and what a harsh cleaner or a stiff brush degrades.

So the practical translation is short. If the mesh is bare metal, plain water and a soft brush — soap is unnecessary and detergent left in a metal weave attracts dirt. If the mesh is fiberglass, which on this coast it very probably is, a mild soapy solution is the manufacturer’s own instruction, and the phrase to take seriously is the last one: avoiding hard scrubbing. Nothing about a screen rewards force.

Telling aluminium from fiberglass takes about four seconds

Push a fingertip gently into the middle of a panel and take it away. Fiberglass springs straight back to flat, because the coated glass yarn is elastic. Aluminium mesh takes the shape you pushed into it and keeps it — soft metal wire does not recover, which is also why an aluminium screen that a dog or a hurricane shutter has leaned on carries that dimple for the rest of its life.

Two more tells. Fiberglass strands look faintly glossy and rounded up close, because of the vinyl coat; aluminium is flat, matte and grey-silver even when dark-anodised. And Phifer notes that its fiberglass “will not rust, corrode or stain” — so if there is a chalky white bloom or an orange weep anywhere in the weave itself, you are holding metal. On a coastal house that single test also tells you where your maintenance problem is going to be, which is the subject of a later section.

The Gulf Coast weave is tighter than the national default, which is exactly why yours greys faster

The standard American insect screen is an 18-by-14 weave — eighteen strands per inch one way, fourteen the other. A great deal of this coast is not screened with it. Phifer describes its 20-by-20 alternative as a “tightly woven 20x20 mesh designed to keep out most smaller flying insects like no-see-ums, gnats, sand flies, and other bugs that may inhabit marshy or coastal areas,” which is a fairly precise description of Escambia Bay, the Caloosahatchee and every mangrove edge in Collier County.

That is the right choice here and nobody should talk anyone out of it. But it has a consequence that no national cleaning guide mentions, because no national guide assumes it: a finer filter loads faster. Twenty by twenty has meaningfully smaller apertures than eighteen by fourteen, so it catches a larger share of what blows at it — oak pollen in March and April, salt aerosol year-round within a mile or two of open water, and the fine grey road film that settles on everything. The screen that makes a Gulf Coast evening bearable is the screen that goes dull first. If yours seems to need washing more often than a relative’s house up north, that is not neglect and it is not a defect. It is the mesh doing its job.

It also changes what “dirty” looks like. A loaded 20-by-20 panel does not look filmy so much as dim — the view through it flattens and the light coming into the room drops before any actual dirt is visible. The usual way people discover this is by cleaning one screen and then looking at the window next to it.

Laying them flat is most of the method

Work on one elevation at a time and take the screens out before you wet anything. Cleaning a screen in place seems like the shortcut and is the reason so many people end up doing the job twice: the water has nowhere to carry the dirt except through the mesh onto the glass and down into the sill track, so you finish with a clean screen, a streaked window and a channel full of wet grit.

Mark them as they come out. This is the step that saves the afternoon. Screens are cut to their individual openings and the tolerances are small, so a set that gets shuffled will not go back — and a panel forced into a slightly wrong opening leaves exactly the gap the whole thing exists to close. A strip of masking tape on the frame with the room and the position on it is enough. Take a photograph of the elevation first if there are more than about six.

Lay each panel flat on something soft and supportive — a lawn, a couple of towels on a driveway, a sheet of plywood on trestles if you have one. Not propped against a wall, which is how frames get bowed, and not standing in a bucket. Rinse both faces to lift the loose material, then wash with the mild soapy solution and a soft-bristled brush, working along the weave rather than in circles. Circular scrubbing is what pushes strands out of square and leaves a permanently distorted patch that catches the light afterwards.

Kitchen and grill-side screens are the exception worth knowing about: cooking aerosol turns the film greasy and it will not lift with plain soapy water. A degreasing dish soap, warm water, longer contact and no more pressure than anywhere else is the answer — contact time rather than force, which is the same principle we lay out in soft washing versus pressure washing.

Rinse thoroughly from the top of the frame down, then stand them on edge to dry before they go back. A screen reinstalled damp traps moisture between the mesh and the frame lip and against the sill, and in this climate that is a fortnight to visible mildew. Ten minutes in the sun is enough.

The mesh is not the part that fails

The instinct to reach for a pressure washer is understandable. The fabric is sold on its toughness, and it is tough — the heavier pool-and-patio grade is marketed on withstanding windblown storm debris. But debris resistance and jet resistance are unrelated properties, and the thing that fails is not the weave.

It is the spline. Screen mesh is held in the frame by a flexible rubber or vinyl cord rolled into a channel around the perimeter, and it is held there by friction alone. A concentrated jet lifts it out of the channel or tears the mesh at the edge where it turns into the groove, and at that point you are not cleaning a screen any more, you are re-screening one. The same is true on a lanai at much greater cost, which is why every crew on this coast treats an enclosure as a low-pressure job without exception.

Two smaller things to avoid. Solvent cleaners, oven cleaner and abrasive powders all attack the vinyl coat, and once that coat is scoured the glass yarn underneath greys permanently and holds dirt worse than it did before. And do not lean on a panel to reach the middle — support it, or work from both sides.

It is worth saying plainly that a professional cleaning a pool cage does use a dilute chemical mix rather than dish soap, and that is not a contradiction. They are cleaning a two-storey structure that cannot be taken down, laid flat or hand-brushed, so the chemistry and the dwell time do the work the brush would otherwise do. Six removable window screens on a lawn do not need that, and you should not try to reproduce it out of a jug.

In salt air the corrosion is on the frame, not the fabric

Because the fiberglass mesh “will not rust, corrode or stain,” anything chalky, powdery or orange on a coastal screen is coming from the aluminium — the frame extrusion, the corner keys, the spline channel and the pull tabs. That is where a house within sight of the water actually loses its screens, and it is a slower and more expensive failure than a dirty panel.

The maintenance for it is unglamorous and free: while the panels are out and flat, wipe the frame down with the same soapy water and rinse it, rather than only washing the mesh. And in between full cleans, a plain fresh-water rinse over the screens on the seaward elevations does more good than any product, because it removes the salt before it has time to sit. The lanai screen is the same fabric doing a much harder job

Everything above is about panels you can lift out, but the question most people on this coast actually have is about the ones they cannot, so here is the honest short version for a screened lanai or a screen room.

The fabric is the same and the constraints are the same — low pressure, no hard scrubbing, and the spline is still the weak point. What changes is scale and access. You are working overhead as well as vertically, on roof panels you cannot reach from a ladder safely, on a structure whose frame is load-bearing, and often with an integrated super gutter along the beam that is full of organic sludge and is a separate task from the screen. In the Panhandle there is a fourth complication: pine needles arrive point-first and spear through a standard weave instead of resting on it, so they have to come out by hand or with a blower before any water goes on — the reason that is a Pensacola problem and not a Naples one is in the Panhandle pollen guide.

The realistic dividing line is height and hand-reach. A small screened porch you can reach every panel of, from the ground, with a soft brush and a garden hose is a Saturday. A full cage, a two-storey enclosure, or anything with roof panels is not, and the failure mode there is a torn panel rather than a bad result. A torn screen stops being a cleaning problem

The last thing worth saying is that the point of the exercise is not how the house looks. The Florida Department of Health puts screens in its standing Drain and Cover guidance under the heading “COVER doors and windows with screens,” with the instruction: “Keep mosquitoes out of your house. Repair damaged screening on windows, doors, porches, and patios.” Note that the state names porches and patios in the same breath as windows — a lanai with a hole in it is on that list. UF/IFAS gives the same instruction inside its source-reduction guidance: “Repair torn window and door screens to exclude mosquitoes from indoors.”

Which sets a sensible boundary on the whole job. Wash a screen when it is dull. But when the weave has gone brittle, when a corner has pulled out of the spline channel, or when there is a tear you have already patched once, stop cleaning it. Re-screening a window panel is inexpensive, it is often done while you wait, and a clean screen with a hole in it is doing none of the work the state is asking of it.
